My Thoughts: If you’re off to the cinema at the start of the year to see Liam Neeson’s latest action movie, you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into. I was disappointed by last year’s offering of The Commuter (2018) so I was hesitant about Cold Pursuit, but the trailer looked decent and almost made it seem like a comedy in some places. Then earlier this week I went to actually see it. What is this movie?!
It’s like Taken meets Fargo – and I’m not sure how I feel about it. There are some moments that are quite obviously meant to be funny, but others that seemed quite dark…but humorous? It didn’t help the screen I was in was almost empty, and I was the only one laughing. I feel like I needed someone to be holding up a sign letting me know if I was allowed to laugh at what was happening or not.
On the plus side, however, it was refreshing for a movie to not have Liam Neeson simply beating the crap out of everyone in front of some shaky camera with choppy editing. It was much more stylised than that. I just wish some of the other characters got fleshed out a little more. At 2 hours length, there should have been enough time for that.
I need to see this movie again I think, knowing what to expect. Honestly, I think I enjoyed it, but I’m not certain yet.
Best Bit: Every time someone dies in this movie, a title card comes up with their name and nickname. This leads to some hilarious moments when the card comes up unexpectedly and you’re like, what?! Oh, that poor guy!
Worst Bit: It takes too long for the movie to find it’s feet. I felt confused for almost the entire first half of the movie because I couldn’t work out what kind of movie it actually was. Also, maybe I was just tired but it felt like it was at least an hour longer than it actually was.
Fun Trivia: Liam Neeson has stated this will be his final action movie role.
(NOOOOOOO! Please say it isn’t so. I need my guilty pleasure movies!)
My Rating: 3 out of 5 rolls of chicken wire, which every murderous father should keep in the trunk of his car…or snow plow.
