Director: Rob Savage
Runtime: 57 Minutes
Main Cast: Haley Bishop, Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward, Edward Linard, Seylan Baxter
Plot: During the Coronavirus lockdown of 2020, six friends hire a medium to conduct a seance over a Zoom call. Some of the group take things more seriously than others, but what starts out slightly spooky turns sinister very quickly.
My Thoughts: Did you even get through lockdown if you didn’t have a Zoom call? I only had a few, and they were quizzes with my family. The idea of a movie shown through this medium was absolutely fascinating to me, and although it sounded absolutely terrifying (I’m a wimp), at only 57 minutes there was no way I was going to pass up the chance to watch Host. It was made in just 12 weeks and never had a proper script, but it’s so effective and is honestly one of the stand out movies of the year for me.
The chemistry between the characters feels real, I actually wish I’d watched the movie on my laptop for an authentic experience because I would have felt part of the whole thing. Teddy, one of the group, is a bit of a douche but I loved his suggestion of turning the seance into a bit of a drinking game, I definitely would have been up for that!
It will be no surprise to you that Host scared the absolute shit out of me. Honestly, I haven’t been so scared watching a movie since It (2017). I don’t know whether it was the subject matter, or the way it was filmed, but there was a 5-10 minute chunk of the movie where I had to mute the whole thing and watch through the corner of my eyes. I couldn’t handle the tension!
Best Bit: I won’t give too much away but there’s a bit after things have really taken a hard turn to scaryville involving a face mask filter and I just…couldn’t handle it. The scene went on forever, and it was just SO creepy but so effective! Here’s hoping we don’t have another lockdown (for serious reasons of course) because there’s no way in hell I’m ever taking part in a Zoom call again!
Worst Bit: There’s always someone in the group who has to ruin it, isn’t there? But on a serious note, there’s something holding the movie back from being outstanding and I can’t place my finger on it. Still, it’s better than it has any right to be.
Fun Trivia: Parts of the script were redacted so the cast didn’t know what would happen throughout. Certain things were pre-recorded and played back for the cast to get their genuine reactions.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 shots for you to down every time the nice lady says astroplane…
