Online Association of Female Film Critics 2020 Awards Winners

A little over a year ago I was accepted as a member of the Online Association of Female Film Critics – what an honour! I feel so lucky to be part of  something so important. Last month was particularly special as I got to put forward my nominations for their annual awards, and then cast my vote a few days later. I’ve always enjoyed awards season but being a part of it is just something else. If you missed the winners being announced on Twitter earlier today, here they are, with some of my thoughts.

BEST FILM
First Cow
Minari
Nomadland
One Night in Miami
Promising Young Woman

WINNER: Promising Young Woman
I’m thrilled with this win, there’s nothing more to say!

BEST DIRECTOR
Lee Isaac Chung, Minari
Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
Regina King, One Night in Miami
Kelly Reichardt, First Cow
Chloé Zhao, Nomadland

WINNER: Chloé Zhao, Nomadland
I thought Nomadland was fine, but I didn’t love it. However, it’s looking like Zhao is going to sweep this season and I’ll always be happy with a female win!

BEST MALE LEAD
Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Delroy Lindo, Da 5 Bloods
Mads Mikkelsen, Another Round
Steven Yeun, Minari

WINNER: Riz Ahmed, Sound of Metal
This was a HUGE surprise, but one I couldn’t be mad with! I was torn between him and Chadwick but when Chadwick is almost guaranteed the Oscar it’s nice to see some love for Riz.

BEST FEMALE LEAD
Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Vanessa Kirby, Pieces of a Woman
Frances McDormand, Nomadland
Elisabeth Moss, The Invisible Man
Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman

WINNER: Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
Just assume that any time PYW wins a category, my reaction is “yaaaaaaas!”

BEST SUPPORTING MALE
Sacha Baron Cohen, The Trial of the Chicago 7
Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
Bill Murray, On the Rocks
Leslie Odom Jr., One Night in Miami
Paul Raci, Sound of Metal

WINNER: Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
This movie has no UK release date that I’m aware of, which is a shame.

BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE
Maria Bakalova, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Ellen Burstyn, Pieces of a Woman
Dominique Fishback, Judas and the Black Messiah
Amanda Seyfried, Mank
Yuh-jung Youn, Minari

WINNER: Yuh-jung Youn, Minari
Okay, my vote went to Maria Bakalova but I watched Minari for the first time last night and oh my. Yuh-jung Youn would have been my pick if I’d watched it in time. She was the life and soul of that movie!

BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE
Da 5 Bloods
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Minari
One Night in Miami
The Trial of the Chicago 7

WINNER: One Night in Miami
The lack of love for The Trial of the Chicago 7 makes me a little sad, I hoped it would win in at least 1 category.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Lee Isaac Chung, Minari
Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
Eliza Hittman, Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Miranda July, Kajillionaire
Andy Siara, Palm Springs

WINNER: Emerald Fennel, Promising Young Woman & Eliza Hittman, Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Look at that beautiful lineup! Gutted for Kajillionaire but the fact it was nominated enough to be in the running means a lot to me.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Sarah Gubbins, Shirley
Christopher Hampton & Florian Zeller, The Father
Charlie Kaufman, I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Kemp Powers, One Night in Miami
Chloé Zhao, Nomadland

WINNER: Chloé Zhao, Nomadland

BEST DOCUMENTARY
Collective
Dick Johnson is Dead
The Mole Agent
The Painter and the Thief
Time

WINNER: Collective
I don’t watch many documentaries at all so I bowed out of this category, but I’ll make an effort to watch Collective now.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Onward
Over the Moon
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon
Soul
Wolfwalkers

WINNER: Wolfwalkers
I’ve heard nothing but good things about Wolfwalkers and I’m patiently waiting to get my hands on a copy. I liked Onward but it’s always nice to see the smaller studios win these awards.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Christopher Blauvelt, First Cow
Stéphane Fontaine, Ammonite
Matthew Libatique, Birds of Prey
Erik Messerschmidt, Mank
Joshua James Richards, Nomadland

WINNER: Joshua James Richards, Nomadland
I might not have loved the movie but Nomadland was, without a doubt, my winner here. It was stunning.

BREAKTHROUGH FILMMAKER
Kitty Green, The Assistant
Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
Radha Blank, The Forty-Year-Old Version
Channing Godfrey Peoples, Miss Juneteenth
Natalie Erika James, Relic

WINNER: Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman
😀

BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMANCE
Kingsley Ben-Adir, One Night in Miami
Sidney Flanigan, Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Orion Lee, First Cow
Cristin Milioti, Palm Springs
Tahar Rahim, The Mauritanian

WINNER: Sidney Flanigan, Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Only one of my picks made the nominations list, I think I went too obscure.

THE ROSIE
The Assistant
The Forty-Year-Old Version
Never Rarely Sometimes Always
Nomadland
Promising Young Woman

WINNER: Never Rarely Sometimes Always

  1. Glad we are fellow OAFFC members! Great idea making a post about it instead of the Golden Globes, ahah.

Hope you see Wolfwalkers soon, I LOVE it so much! I hope it wins an Oscar!!

    1. I’m honsestly so proud to be part of a group of such amazing women!
I have to rely on other bloggers for Globes coverage, we don’t get it broadcast in the UK sadly!
I’ve heard so many great things about Wolfwalkers, I’m so excited to see it. I’ve always been a huge Pixar/Disney fan but it’s boring when they take the awards home so often.

    1. I know a few people who hated the ending and I definitely understand why. Have you ever seen A Simple Favor? I can’t help but put these two movies in the same basket. They aren’t similar in terms of storyline AT ALL but definitely in terms of style and dark humor!
