Going Off Topic (#19) Jetlag is a B-word

vacation-photos

I’m baaaack! Oh boy, what a vacation! We had such a blast. Going away with a toddler is SO MUCH hard work but to see her little face so happy makes it all worth it. The jetlag hit us hard, though. We arrived back home on Saturday at 9pm, put the kiddo to bed at around 11pm…and she woke up for the day at 1am. Argh. Fingers crossed we’re close to getting back to a normal sleep schedule now, because I’m feeling like an extra from The Dead Don’t Die right now.

We had the best time, though. New York will always have a special place in my heart, and it’s impossible to not have fun when you’re in Disneyland! Like typical Brits we didn’t cope well with the heat on the hottest days but we were so blessed with the weather. Our little girl Daisy has decided that churros are life (can’t blame her) and given the chance, she would move to live on the beach.

Just before we went away though, I’d fallen out of regular movie watching and struggled to write anything for the blog, but I’m feeling really excited to catch back up now! As soon as I can be confident of getting a good night’s sleep I’ll be racing to my local cinema to see It: Chapter Two, probably to be so scared that I won’t sleep again for another week.

I hope you guys are all doing well, and I’ll be catching up with all the blogs I follow this week!

Going Off Topic (#18) Summer Lovin’

I’ve been so active on the blog for a few months and yet I haven’t posted anything for a week. You know why? I haven’t watched a movie for a week! Can you believe it?! It’s down to two things. The first being the UK had a bit of a heatwave and I honestly almost melted. The other being I got sucked into the reality show Love Island which took away all of my almost non-existent free time. The final is tonight though so I’m hoping to get back into a regular schedule this week!

What’s coming up next month though is…my 30th Birthday! Urgh. I’m going to be 30. It feels weird to be hitting that milestone age but yet I don’t feel too badly about it. I’m married, I have a gorgeous and hilarious little toddler, we have a house and mortgage, and I feel fairly accomplished with that. Any chance of a career has been pushed aside but hey – you can’t have it all!

So on my 30th Birthday, 23rd August, I’ll be flying out on holiday with said husband and toddler, as well as my parents and littlest brother, to the USA! We’re going to New York for 4 nights and then over to California for 10 nights to do Disney, Universal and chill at the beaches. I honestly can’t wait. I obviously won’t be on the blog for those 2 weeks but I’ve got some of my reviews from my older blog scheduled so at least there will be something posted from here regularly whilst I’m gone.

In other news, I’m almost finished with S3 of Stranger Things. It’s been a slow start and I don’t think it’s better than S2 (yet!) but there have been some amazing moments so far, like Daddy Hopper and the antics at Scoops Ahoy. I’ve heard it ends with a bang so I’m looking forward to it! I’ve also made a start on S2 of Big Little Lies which is looking promising so far.

The cinema releases seem to be unusually quiet for this time of year, but I’m chalking that up to no one wanting to release anything at the same time as The Lion King. I might venture out to see The Current War just for the cast, but other than that there’s nothing worth seeing until this weekend when Hobbs & Shaw comes out! I’ve only seen 2 of the Fast & Furious movies but Hobbs & Shaw looks like so much fun – I can’t wait!

So thanks for bearing with me while I haven’t been around – I’ll be catching up real soon!

Going Off Topic (#8) A New Normal

You guys, I made a resolution to try and post once a week and so far I’ve managed it every 3 days! I hope this isn’t just an amazing start that’s going to fail by February, like every diet I’ve ever started on Jan 1st. To be fair, it’s because my little one has been a gem at bedtime lately and it’s given me this laptop time! In fact, life itself has got more of a routine now, I can’t believe Daisy is going to be 3 months old next week!

Life isn’t ever going to be the same again, just trying to do the week’s food shop requires professional event planning experience, but we’re finding a new normal, and we can do more ‘normal’ things now. In fact, on Wednesday I’m meeting up with Jenna to see The Greatest Showman at the cinema! I cannot WAIT. I hope it’s good, I’ve been avoiding listening to the soundtrack in advance in case I ruin it for myself.

What else? We’re planning a big American holiday for next year to celebrate mine and my husband’s 30th birthday (ugh I’m old!) and just today I’ve made plans to go back to Disneyland Paris with 2 of my favourite girlfriends where I’ll be child-free for a couple of days! I might even get drunk! Ahh, simple pleasures…

So, TV wise I’m doing terribly. Bedtimes may be great, but dinner times aren’t, and in 5 weeks we’ve watched 4 episodes of The Punisher. We’ll get there eventually! It took us about 3 weeks to watch Season 2 of Stranger Things, and that was well worth the wait! I daren’t (is that a word?) even try and speculate what we’ll watch next, although I hear Season 4 of Black Mirror is out!

giphy2

It takes me an entire day (sometimes 2) to watch a movie in chunks at the moment, but I’ve been able to see quite a few this month so far! I haven’t blogged about all of them just because some I don’t have much to say about, but here’s a little recap:
The LEGO Ninjago Movie (2017) – Not as good as the trailers made it look, but still enjoyable and worth a watch.
Flatliners (2017) – I’ve never seen the original so can’t compare, but I actually quite enjoyed it. Diego Luna makes everything better!
mother! (2017) – What. The. Actual. Hell. It took me far too long to realise the whole thing was a religious metaphor. I loved the first half until I caught on.
Dunkirk (2017)Review here.
Battle of the Sexes (2017)Review here.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2018)Review here.
The Shape of Water (2017) – Not my kind of thing at all, but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

Next week I’m hoping to see Focus (2015) which my family watched last week and loved, and I need to see if any of the other big awards movies are out on VOD yet to catch up as best as I can!

Is there anything you guys have watched recently which you loved and recommend? I’m still clueless on the latest releases!

Bonus GIF just because…

Going Off Topic (#4) I fell off the blogging wagon and landed in Disneyland Paris

going-off-topic-banner

I’ve been for a while, and I’m so sorry! Turns out being pregnant kind of sucks sometimes. Between all the sleeping, nausea, bathroom breaks and panicking, I wasn’t leaving myself with much time to actually watch anything, let alone blog about it. I’m into the second trimester now though, and feeling more lively, which was good timing as I’ve just got back from Disneyland Paris!

It was a trip I’ve had booked for a long time now with my husband and 4 of our friends. In fact, it’s the first holiday we’ve been on as a group of friends! We had the best time and got far too much shopping done, but we couldn’t resist the pins and a couple of outfits for our baby girl! That’s right! We had an elective gender scan booked the night before we traveled, and we’re having a girl. I’m over the moon!

disneyland-paris-star-wars-soiree-2017

Although I haven’t been watching much, I’ve got some reading done over the last few weeks. I read the first book in Stephen King’s Bill Hodges trilogy, Mr. Mercedes (LOVED it) and I’m actually over halfway in to the second book now, Finders Keepers. In between those books, a blogging friend of mine, Chris Widdop emailed me and asked if I would be interested in reading one of his novels, Velcro: The Ninja Kat. I jumped at the opportunity and Chris kindly gifted me the whole trilogy. I’ll have my review posted soon! Chris, you’re a talented guy.

I watched the first episode of Fargo: Season 3 before flying to Paris.¬†I’m a huge fan of Season 1, and I thought Season 2 was pretty good too, but half way into the first episode of Season 3 I almost gave up. Too many characters were being introduced with no hint of a real plot, but I’m glad I stuck it out because I was hooked by the end. I’m really interested to see where this leads.

Also on my radar is 13 Reasons Why. This seems to be the show on everyone’s minds right now and I’m trying to stay away from reviews until I can watch it myself. I get the gist of what it’s about and the news of a Season 2 has confused me, but I won’t look into it any further. I have a feeling this show won’t take me long to get through!

I’ve been avoiding talking about movies because of how terribly I’ve done. I’ve watched 3 movies in 2 weeks! How bad is that! I watched Aladdin with my husband before our Disney trip because he hadn’t seen it since he was little, and I forgot how much I love that movie. Adam Driver’s SNL sketch of ‘A Whole New World’ has ruined that scene for me though. No, no, that’s a bad choice of wording. I’d actually prefer Adam Driver’s version slotted in to the original movie!

I FINALLY got to watch Get Out, after feeling like the only person in the world who hadn’t seen it. I went in virtually blind as many of you recommended, and I enjoyed it. I wish I loved it though, but I think the hype killed it for me a bit. It was fascinating, and funny in a ‘should I be laughing at this’ kind of way but the twists weren’t so shocking to me. That ending was absolutely genius though, I’ll give it that!

We went to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on opening night at our nearest IMAX, and it was hella fun. I didn’t think it was possible for me to love Rocket any more than I already did, but I just fell for that little trash panda! I still prefer the original, but I knew more of the soundtrack in that one, and I’m a sucker for an origin story. Unless it’s Batman. I’m so fed up of his origin story.

So, I’ve been playing catch up on everyone else’s blogs, but here are some of my favourite posts that I read today:

The Punk Theory shared 5 of her Favourite Shows from when she was little.

The Sporadic Chronicles of a Beginner Blogger reviews my all-time favourite romcom, Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Rambling Film reminded me that Odd Thomas needs to be pushed to the top of my watch list.

Epileptic Moondancer reviews Get Out perfectly!

Two Dollar Cinema reviews my favourite trashy movie of the moment, Collateral Beauty.

A Merry Fictional Blog Challenge

I can’t believe that in a week’s time, Christmas will be over! It feels like we spend so long getting ready for the huge event, and then it passes by without us barely noticing. With 4 work days to go I was in need of some festive cheer, so when I saw Katy at Oh So Geeky post her answers for her ‘A Merry Fictional Blog Challenge’ she couldn’t have had better timing!

If you’d like to get involved also, simply check out Katy’s original post. But without further ado, here are my answers!

Advent Calendar: Traditions you celebrate during December?
Aside from the usual family traditions, we have a long standing tradition of a big family get together to the cinema on the Sunday before Christmas. It started many years ago with The Polar Express, and we’ve been every year since. In recent years we’ve seen The Hobbit trilogy, last year we saw The Force Awakens, and this year will be Rogue One. I say will be because we’ve had to change the date this year to Boxing Day!

Carols: What’s your favorite song(s)?
There is no possible way I could pick a favourite Christmas song, it’s my favourite time of year and there are too many! However, it always seems to be that Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is the first to be played on the radio, and that song is glorious.

Coal: A naughty character you’d send coal to?
I’d send coal to Ajax Francis, from Deadpool.

Fireplace: Favorite Christmas movie that melts your heart?
My favourite Christmas movies are Jingle All The Way and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but they’re comedies. There has never been an instance that I’ve watched The Polar Express without ugly crying into a mug of tea, however.

Gingerbread: What’s your favorite holiday snack?
This might be an odd one, but After Eight Mints, and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. I don’t know if they’re a worldwide thing or UK only, but I can eat an entire box of mints and/or an entire orange and not feel bad about how sick it would make me.

Hot Cocoa: What’s your favorite drink?
I don’t like hot chocolate or coffee, but Costa are doing a Hot Spiced Apple drink this year which is absolutely to die for!

Mistletoe: Character you’d like to meet under the mistletoe?
Only one?! I’ll go with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock.

benedict-cumberbatch-sherlock-mistletoe

He seems confused…

Mittens: A cozy outfit that keeps you warm during winter?
The weather can be so odd here in the UK. In the winter I tend to wear exactly what I would any other season, but with a big winter coat and gloves in my pocket just in case!

Naughty: Three characters who’d make the Naughty list.
Paul Spector (The Fall), Man in Black (Westworld) & Rowan North (Ghostbusters).

Nice: Three characters who’d make the Nice list.
Moana (Moana, funnily enough), Jyn Erso (Rogue One) & Dustin Henderson (Stranger Things).

North Pole: If you could spend Christmas anywhere (even fictional), where would you go?
Maybe this is a boring choice as it’s real rather than fictional, but after spending 2 days at Disneyland California this year as part of my honeymoon, I would love to go back for Christmas, it would be magical!

Presents: A book or movie on your wishlist?
I’m planning on doing a lot of reading in the New Year, much more than the 2 measly books I managed in 2016! So I can’t think of one specific book right now, but I’ll have a whole list by January.

giphy.gif

Rudolph: What’s your favorite TV holiday special?
I’m sure there are some great ones out there, but another family tradition of mine is watching Shrek The Halls on Christmas Eve. It’s been so many years now we know all the words. We’re probably really embarrassing, come to think of it.

Santa: A character you’d love to exchange presents with? What would you get them?
I would love to work in the office from Parks & Recreation and take part in an office Secret Santa there. I’d rig it so I could buy for Leslie Knope so I could get her all sorts of stationery and organisational tools, because we have a shared passion in that area.

Scrooge: A villain you’d help see life in a different way?
Kylo Ren for sure. It wouldn’t work (I already tried at Disneyland) but I’d still give it a go. I would either end up a quivering mess on the floor (again, happened at Disneyland) or I’d get cut in half before I finished talking.

meeting-kylo-ren-disneyland

I tried to sass Kylo Ren, and he really wasn’t impressed. I was legit terrified!

Snowflake: Something that makes you feel special.
Last weekend, doing a food shop at the supermarket. They were playing Christmas songs non-stop, and in the bakery isle there was a bit of a sing-a-long going on between some strangers, and it’s honestly one of the most special things to be a part of. It’s the littlest things in life sometimes!

Tree: What do you decorate your house with for the season?
We have our usual Christmas tree, tinsel around every surface we can find, and a few silly decorations too. This year my husband and I are sharing the Lego Star Wars advent calendar, which has a prime location in the living room.

Yuletide: The top 3 things in your life that make you the most happy?
Aside from family and friends (who are the true number 1) I would say coming home from a pants day at work to find my husband and 2 cats who are always happy to see me, lazy evenings spent on the sofa watching a movie, and pizza. Definitely pizza.

BONUS: Ugly Christmas Sweater: Would you wear a sweater Molly Weasley made you or avoid it like the plague?
OMG I WOULD WEAR IT WITH PRIDE.
